Starting a new chapter. Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds and Aja Volkman went through several ups and downs throughout their marriage before splitting for good in 2022.
The musicians tied the knot in 2011, one year after they met playing gigs in Las Vegas. “I was kind of at a place in my life where I thought, ‘This guy is so cute, but I’m not really interested in meeting anybody right now,’” Volkman told Las Vegas Weekly in February 2013 of her and Reynolds’ early relationship.”But we really just fell in love, and about a year later we ended up getting married and then we had a baby.”
They became parents in 2012 with the birth of their daughter Arrow and welcomed twin daughters Gia and Coco five years later.
In April 2018, the twosome announced that they were parting ways. “After 7 beautiful years together, Aja and I’s marriage has come to an end,” Reynolds tweeted at the time. “Our children continue to be the most important thing in our lives, & we will continue to coparent them with all our love. I ask that you please respect our privacy at this time as we work through this as a family.”
Two months later, the “Bones” singer revealed that he and his ex were “doing really good” following their breakup. “I think life moves forward and we’re doing good,” he exclusively told Us Weekly at the premiere of his HBO documentary, Believer, in June 2018.
The duo’s separation didn’t last long, however. A source exclusively told Us in November 2018 that Reynolds and the Oregon native were hoping to rebuild their romance, noting, “Dan and Aja are trying to work things out.”
By 2019, the pair were back together. “We decided to just keep working. … It’s been a work in progress, and we’re doing great,” Reynolds revealed in an April interview with Us. “My biggest goal in this realm of the platform I’ve been given is to show that everybody has issues.”
He continued: “Marriage is not perfect. Relationships aren’t perfect. My body [isn’t perfect]. I have autoimmune diseases. I have ulcerative colitis. I have ankylosing spondylitis. I have depression. I have anxiety. We’re all humans.”
After welcoming their fourth child, son Valentine, in October 2019, Volkman revealed via Instagram that the “Demons” singer had popped the question for a second time.
“Tonight we put our kids to bed and began to clean up the mess of the day. I could see that he was nervous but I didn’t know why,” the Nico Vega band member captioned a pic of her engagement ring in front of their Christmas tree in December 2019. “He got on one knee and before he could open his mouth I began to cry. Loaded tears that held nearly 10 years of growth. The answer has always been yes. Even before we knew what that meant.”
Despite making things work for a few more years, the twosome called it quits for good in September 2022. “I am saddened to say that after many beautiful years together, Aja and I have separated,” Reynolds wrote in a since-deleted tweet. “Being great parents to our children is our number one priority. Thank you for always supporting us with love and care for all these years.”
Us confirmed that Volkman officially filed for divorce from her longtime partner in April 2023.

Reynolds had already moved on with actress Minka Kelly, whom he was first spotted with in November 2022. The duo sparked a romance shortly after the Friday Night Lights alum’s May 2022 split from former The Daily Show host Trevor Noah.
“These are obviously early days for Minka and Dan, but it’s going great and they’re both incredibly happy,” a source exclusively told Us in December 2022. “Being back on the singles’ scene after long relationships has been a challenging adjustment for each of them, so they’re taking their time and easing into it as opposed to running before they can walk, so to speak. But so far, so good, and they’re having fun, getting along great.”

The "It's Time" singer and Volkman met while playing gigs at Wasted Space in Las Vegas. “It seemed that music was the only link we had," Reynolds told LA Weekly in July 2012. "But as we got to know each other on a more personal level, we found that we had so many similarities in our hearts that it was scary. I never had met someone who I connected to so instantly. Everything about her captivated me. I needed to know her."

One year after their split, the couple were officially back on. “We decided to just keep working. … It’s been a work in progress, and we’re doing great,” Reynolds told Us in April. “My biggest goal in this realm of the platform I’ve been given is to show that everybody has issues.”
He went on to note that marriage and relationships "aren't perfect,” adding, "My body [isn’t perfect]. I have autoimmune diseases. I have ulcerative colitis. I have ankylosing spondylitis. I have depression. I have anxiety. We’re all humans.”
In May of that year, the "Whatever It Takes" singer revealed that their falling out only strengthened their relationship. “I think life is not perfect and [if] you admit that and you try to grow and rebuild… It’s like breaking a bone,” he exclusively shared with Us. “You break a bone and they say it’s stronger, so yeah. I do think so.”

The twosome celebrated Christmas by getting engaged for the second time. "He got on one knee and before he could open his mouth I began to cry," Volkman captioned an Instagram post in December. "Loaded tears that held nearly 10 years of growth. The answer has always been yes. Even before we knew what that meant."
Volkman also reflected on what led to the pair’s breakup one year prior. "We went through a whirlwind of successes and failures and we held each other tight because it was scary. But we also suffocated each other," she wrote at the time. "We didn’t know ourselves well enough to maintain the strength from within. And it all began to crumble. The world was harsh. There was so much love, but also criticism and ugliness. We weren’t prepared to be disliked or misunderstood. It hurt."

Nearly three years after getting back together, the two announced in September that they had called it quits for good. “I am saddened to say that after many beautiful years together Aja and I have separated. Being great parents to our children is our number one priority,” Reynolds wrote in a since-deleted tweet. “Thank you for always supporting us with love and care for all these years.”

Us confirmed in April that Volkman has officially filed for divorce from the Grammy winner. She addressed their relationship in a lengthy Instagram post that same month, writing, "Navigating being in a public space while going through all of the things we have been through this year has been hard for both Dan and I."
She continued: “I've never spoken about the details of our marriage or separation or divorce. I don't intend to. We have four amazing children, and a lot of passionate music all created and inspired by a divine connection. Neither of us are perfect people and we both have made many mistakes, but we have also both done what our evolution permits as our best."
