Lets name them: Ian McKellen / Simon Callow / Derek Jacobi / Anthony Sher / Simon Russell Beale /Rupert Everett / and new guys Russell Tovey / Ben Whishaw / Andrew Scott / Luke Evans. Seems been gay is no hindrance any more for having a good career in acting - like Matt Bomer and Zach Quinto in the USA.
While lots more have played gay several times they almost seem bi now: Ewan McGregor / Jude Law / Rupert Graves / James Wilby / Colin Firth
by Anonymous | reply 129 | August 10, 2018 4:11 PM |
Andrew Scott is Irish and may not appreciate being labelled British. Other gay British actors include John Sessions, Olly Alexander (better known as a singer but has had several acting roles too), Mark Gatiss and, of course, John Barrowman. There are lots of others but I can't think of them at the moment.

And PJ is American. The British list isn't doing well.

[quote]The British list isn't doing well.
I expected much.
We have less openly gay actors here and our society and culture is more conservative in many respects than the US. We're also a small country, which doesn't help.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | October 11, 2015 10:32 AM |
I suppose we may mention soap actors such as Anthony Cotton, John Partridge, Charlie Condou and I am sure there are plenty of others. Must also add Stephen Fry to the list.

David Ames from Brit soap Holby City.
I'd like to bend him over a table.

Michael, French, Ben Daniels, Jeremy Sheffield, Daniel Brocklebank, Darren Bransford - there's no shortage of Grand Old theatre guys and current tv and theatre regulars. It's the ones holding out for Hollywood who hide.

Denholm Elliot was married a couple of times, but clearly wasn't straight since he died of AIDS

Dirk Bogarde was too.

Okay, the beautiful Miss Cillian Murphy isn't British -- she's Irish and a lesbian. Does that count?

Sam Heughan. I know he is a Scottish actor but he is gay, no?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | October 11, 2015 12:58 PM |
Ok. Let's clear this up. British at the moment equals people from England, Scotland and Wales. Those born in Northern Ireland may choose to be either British or Irish. The rest of the island of Ireland is Irish.

[quote] "Denholm Elliot was married a couple of times, but clearly wasn't straight since he died of AIDS"
R18, really? Thick-headed, much? The straight world has always presumed gayness when a man dies of AIDS, but there have been presumably straight nuns who sickened and died after blood transfusions back when the blood supply wasn't screened properly, remember? Were they gay men in drag habits, maybe? Did they secretly abscond from the abbey at night dressed as lumberjacks to go cruise the bars in the Village?

Alan Rickman's straight. Very straight, in fact.
Denholm Elliot was bisexual, as were Alan Bates, Sir Alec Guinness, Sir Larry and Jeremy Brett.
Genuinely GAY British actors of past and present.
Dirk Bogarde Charles Gray Tim Curry Peter Wyngarde Richard Chamberlain Sir John Gielgud Ian Charleson Harry Andrews Gordon Jackson Christopher Biggins Edward Hibbert Graham Chapman Ian Charleson John Inman

Scott Neal from Beautiful Thing and The Bill. He had an affair with the then executive producer of The Bill, Paul Marquess during his second stint in 2002. Paul Marquess later cast him in Hollyoaks.
From the soaps Danny Boy Hatchard and the closet case Danny Miller.
R35 BS. Denholm Elliot and the others were gay.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | October 14, 2015 6:26 AM |
Peter O'Toole was gayer than a priest's picnic basket.
And. I suppose TECHNICALLY you might call some of those men bisexual solely based on the fact they married women and might occasionally stick their penis in their wives, but for most intents and purposes they were flaming pole smokers....

A tragic trio from the 'Carry On' films: Charles Hawtrey, Frankie Howerd, Kenneth Williams.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | October 14, 2015 7:30 AM |
R37, not saying your wrong but what is the chat about Danny Miller? I thought he was all cosied up with an actress girlfriend. I know he plays gay but some of his scenes with a previous actor in the soap were almost painful to watch in their awkwardness. At least this time round he seems to have a bit of rapport with Ryan Hawley.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | October 14, 2015 7:57 AM |
And lets not forget Noel Coward and Ivor Novello, and writers like Terence Rattigan.
Laurence Harvey (not strictly British) was a well known bi/gay too - he certainly know how to charm the older ladies like Hermione Baddeley, Joan Cohn and Margaret Leighton despite being producer James Woolf's "protege", and I am sure Stephen Boyd was, despite his two brief marriages at the start and end of his career. Didn't Sir Michael Redgrave pick him up when Boyd was a doorman at the Odeon Cinema in Leicester Square, London, when Boyd would have been a perfect slice of 50s beefcake - no wonder he was soon in movies.
Then there's John Fraser, and other Aids casualties like Richard Warwick and Gary Bond, and Ian Charleson as mentioned.

Gordon Jackson was married for 39 years, R35 and bred twice, so not totally gay, if at all.

Nope.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | October 14, 2015 1:18 PM |
No mention of Gordon Jackson being "in the life" in Kenneth Williams' diaries. They were edited to prevent embarrassment to/avoid libel suits from various actors and celebrities. They've never printed a full, unexpurgated edition.

Why do we keep rising to P/M/B/T's bait? He posts about the same subjects over and over and over, inflicting his bland obsessions on the rest of us. And we keep answering.
He must have posted a thousand "what's it like to live in England/this British actor is handsome/I wonder what Tom Hardy had for breakfast" threads. Short of his dying in a grease fire (crosses fingers), our best solution is to ignore him and hopefully the little snowflake will drift somewhere else, to blight another board with his mediocrity.
